Su-57 vs. F-35: The Contradiction of Stealth vs. Kinematics
I. The Philosophical Divide
Before comparing thrust-to-weight ratios or radar cross-sections (RCS), one must understand what each nation asked the jet to do.
The F-35 is a "flying supercomputer." Its true lethality lies in sensor fusion. It collects data from its Distributed Aperture System (DAS), its AESA radar, and its electronic warfare suite, and fuses them into a single, intuitive picture for the pilot. Crucially, it shares this data instantly with other F-35s, naval vessels, and ground commanders. A flight of four F-35s acts as a single entity; one can detect a target while another fires a missile from a different vector, all while remaining silent. Su-57 vs
AN/APG-81 AESA radar: Not just for search—can perform
- AN/APG-81 AESA radar: Not just for search—can perform electronic attack, low-probability-of-intercept (LPI) tracking, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mapping.
- AN/AAQ-37 Distributed Aperture System (DAS): 6 infrared cameras giving 360° spherical awareness. Can see a missile launch from below the jet.
- AN/ASQ-239 Barracuda: Passive electronic warfare system that can geolocate emitters (like Su-57’s radar) without the Su-57 knowing it’s been tagged.
- Helmet Mounted Display (HMDS): Pilot can “look through” the floor of the jet to see targets below.
Here, the F-35 holds the initiative. Due to its superior stealth shaping and radar-absorbent materials, it will likely detect the Su-57 first. In a BVR engagement, the F-35 can approach the Su-57’s "WEZ" (Weapon Engagement Zone) undetected. By the time the Su-57’s radar warning receiver alerts the pilot to an incoming AIM-120D AMRAAM, the F-35 may already be turning away to safety. The Su-57 counters this with the R-37M, a massive long-range missile, and the L402 "Himalayas" electronic warfare suite intended to break the F-35’s radar lock. However, you cannot jam what you cannot see. The F-35’s stealth gives it the "first look, first shot, first kill" advantage.
