Deep Dive into the Realtek RTL9210B (2021 Datasheet): The High-Performance USB 3.1 to PCIe/NVMe Bridge
Introduction
Released to mass market in late 2020 and fully documented by mid-2021, the Realtek RTL9210B is a highly integrated bridge controller that converts USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to PCI Express (PCIe) Gen 3 x2, specifically designed for NVMe solid-state drives. By 2021, it had become the industry’s leading alternative to the ASMedia ASM2362, prized for its low power consumption, integrated voltage regulators, and support for advanced features like UASP, TRIM, and S.M.A.R.T. passthrough.
Dynamically switches power states for NVMe/SATA/USB to save energy and balance performance. Internal Controller: rtl9210b datasheet 2021
- Length matching: PCIe differential pairs must be matched to within 2 mils. USB 3.1 pairs: within 5 mils.
- Impedance: 85 ohms differential for USB; 100 ohms for PCIe.
- Decoupling: Place a 10 µF ceramic capacitor within 2 mm of each power pin.
- Via shielding: Ground vias must surround the PCIe lanes on both sides (top and bottom layers).
- Crystal: Use a 25 MHz crystal (load capacitance 20 pF, tolerance ±30 ppm). Route as short as possible away from USB traces.
SATA/AHCI: Supports standard AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) for SATA SSDs. Deep Dive into the Realtek RTL9210B (2021 Datasheet):
- Junction-to-ambient (θJA) : 28°C/W (with 2-layer PCB)
- Maximum junction temperature: 125°C
Throughput: Peak read speeds typically reach between 920–980 MB/s, which is near the theoretical limit of a 10Gbps USB connection. Length matching: PCIe differential pairs must be matched
