Abstract: Kono Oto Tomare! (Stop at This Sound!) is a Japanese manga and anime series that meticulously explores the emotional and technical nuances of the koto, a traditional Japanese string instrument. While the series remains firmly rooted in Japanese musical tradition, its underlying philosophy—the search for a singular, resonant “voice” within an ensemble—finds a profound parallel in the UNESCO-recognized polyphonic singing of Georgia. This paper analyzes the fictional term “qartulad” (in Georgian) as a conceptual lens through which to view the characters’ struggles. By comparing the koto club’s pursuit of Aiju (resonance of hearts) with the Georgian principles of Shemogakheba (the gradual entry of voices) and Krimanchuli (a high-pitched, yodeling flourish), this paper argues that Kono Oto Tomare! unconsciously articulates a universal aesthetic of communal dissonance resolved into transcendent harmony.
