Abstract

Document layout analysis and text extraction remain challenging for Indic scripts due to complex line structures, multiple script boundaries, and scarcity of annotated datasets. We introduce IndoDB21—a curated dataset of 5,000+ document images spanning 11 major Indic languages (Devanagari, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, etc.). Each image is annotated with polygons for 7 layout classes: text lines, headings, tables, figures, footnotes, marginalia, and page objects. We provide ground truth in UTF-8 format, line-level bounding boxes, and script labels. Baseline experiments using Mask R-CNN and LSTM-based OCR yield a mean layout detection mAP of 0.83 and a character error rate of 4.2% on clean documents.
