Bridging the Gap: How to Get Your HP LaserJet 1010 Working on Windows 10 (64-Bit)
The HP LaserJet 1010 is a legend. Built like a tank and using the famously affordable Q2612A toner cartridges, it is a machine that refuses to die. However, if you’ve tried to plug this vintage workhorse into a modern PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11, you’ve likely hit a wall. There is no official "HP LaserJet 1010" driver listed in Windows Update, and the HP support page often leaves users in the lurch.
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Click Add a printer.
- Click "The printer that I want isn't listed".
- Select "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings".
- Use the existing port (USB001) or select "USB" from the dropdown.
- Click Windows Update button in the driver selection window (this will take a few minutes to populate the list).
- Once updated, find HP on the left and HP LaserJet 1010 (or HP LaserJet 2200) on the right.
- You likely installed the PCL6 driver or a PostScript driver.
- Uninstall the printer and reinstall using the PCL5 driver or the HP LaserJet 2200 driver as described in Method 2. The LaserJet 1010 hardware is natively a PCL5 machine.
- Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Add a printer or scanner.
- Wait for "The printer that I want isn’t listed" to appear. Click it.
- Select "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings."
- Choose "Use an existing port" (USB001).
- In the driver list, scroll to HP, then select "HP LaserJet 1010" from the list (it exists in the Microsoft driver store).
Testing & Troubleshooting
- Print a test page: Right-click the printer > Printer Properties > Print Test Page.
- If nothing prints: Go back to Printer Properties > Ports tab. Look for a USB virtual port (e.g., USB001). Check that box. If you only see LPT/COM ports, restart the print spooler service or reboot your PC with the printer on.
Step 4: Restart your PC.
