If you are trying to save your progress in Grand Theft Auto IV and keep seeing the dreaded "Save failed. Please check your storage device and try again" error, you are not alone. This is one of the most notorious bugs in the PC version of GTA 4.
To fix:
- Press
Win + I→ Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection. - Scroll down → Manage ransomware protection.
- If Controlled folder access is On, click Allow an app through Controlled folder access.
- Click Add an allowed app → Recently blocked apps – look for
GTAIV.exeorLaunchGTAIV.exe. - If not listed, click Browse all apps → Navigate to your GTA IV install folder (e.g.,
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV\) and addGTAIV.exe. - Also add
LaunchGTAIV.exeandEFLC.exe(if playing Episodes). - Restart your PC.

- Both single-player Story Mode and imported profile/save users.

3. Restart the Game

- Look for files like

5. Exclude GTA IV Folder from Antivirus
Add entire Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA IV folder to antivirus exclusion list. Press Win + I → Privacy & Security
