From Sinetron to Streaming: The Evolution and Cultural Impact of Indonesian Entertainment and Popular Videos

Abstract

Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation and a leading digital economy in Southeast Asia, presents a unique case study in the evolution of popular video entertainment. This paper examines the trajectory from traditional broadcast television (sinetron and variety shows) to the current dominance of digital platforms, particularly YouTube and TikTok. It argues that Indonesian popular videos are characterized by three defining features: intense localization of global formats, the centrality of Islamic popular culture, and the rise of hyper-local influencer economies. The paper analyzes content genres, production dynamics, audience reception, and regulatory challenges, concluding that Indonesia’s video entertainment landscape is a vibrant, contested space where tradition, modernity, and digital disruption coexist.
