How to Download and Install Chrome OS Flex (ISO Guide)

Chrome OS Flex is a free operating system designed to bring a modern, fast, and secure computing experience to older PC and Mac hardware. Unlike standard Windows or Linux distributions, Chrome OS Flex does not use a traditional ISO file that you copy to a USB drive. Instead, it uses a BIN file wrapped in a specific recovery image format.

  1. Download BalenaEtcher.
  2. Select your chromeos_flex.iso file.
  3. Select your USB drive.
  4. Click Flash. (Etcher handles hybrid ISOs better than Rufus).
  • Expectation: Users expect a standard .ISO file (like Windows or Linux distributions) that they can mount on a USB or burn to a disc.
  • Reality: Google does not provide a standard Chrome OS Flex ISO file for direct download.
  • The Workaround: Instead, you must use the Chromebook Recovery Utility (a Chrome browser extension). This tool downloads the image in the background and writes it directly to your USB drive.

If you need an ISO/VM image (advanced, unofficial)

  • Obtain the recovery .bin/.img from Google’s recovery servers or extract it from the recovery USB.
  • Convert the raw image to a format your VM supports (e.g., with qemu-img convert).
  • Create or adjust a bootable ISO/bootloader if necessary.
  • Expect extra troubleshooting for drivers, network, or graphics in VMs.
  • Download the official recovery image (a .bin or .img file) via the Recovery Utility or directly from Google’s servers.
  • Convert or wrap that image into an ISO, or convert to a raw disk image suitable for virtualization.
  • Modify bootloaders/config to support UEFI/legacy boot in VMs.
  1. Click the clock in the bottom right corner.
  2. Select the gear icon (Settings).
  3. In the search bar, type "Install Chrome OS Flex."
  4. Click "Install Chrome OS Flex."
  5. Read the warning: This will erase your entire hard drive. (Windows, Linux, or macOS will be gone forever).
  6. Click "Install."

The screen went black… then a crisp white “Google” logo emerged. Within 45 seconds, the Chrome OS Flex welcome screen appeared—faster than Windows had ever booted.
