Cla-2a Compressor Limiter | New!
The Waves CLA-2A Compressor / Limiter is a digital emulation of the legendary Teletronix LA-2A, a hand-wired, tube-based hardware unit from the early 1960s. It is renowned for its "silky smooth" optical compression that provides a warm, natural sound, making it a "must-have" for vocals, bass, and acoustic guitars. Core Functionality & Controls
Controls and Parameters (what they do)
- Peak Reduction: Reduces threshold; increasing this increases gain reduction. Acts like a single combined Threshold/Ratio control in practice.
- Gain: Output make-up to compensate for attenuation from compression.
- Meter switch: Toggles Meter to show either Gain Reduction or Output Level.
- Input/Output meters: Monitor incoming level and applied gain reduction (if present).
- Some plug-ins add features: sidechain filter, auto-makeup, attack/release adjustment, stereo link, and dry/wet (mix).
- Vocal processing: The CLA-2A is often used to control the dynamics of vocals, ensuring a consistent level and preventing loud peaks from getting through.
- Drum processing: The unit can be used to control the dynamics of drums, adding punch and control to the sound.
- Mastering: The CLA-2A can be used during the mastering process to add a final layer of control and polish to the audio.
Chris Lord-Alge (CLA) partnered with Waves to create this signature version, which adds modern workflow features (mix knob, external sidechain, noise control) while retaining the vintage tone. cla-2a compressor limiter
Application 3: Mix Bus Glue (The Sneaky Trick)
Most engineers use VCA compressors (like the SSL G-Master) on the mix bus. However, the CLA-2A is a brilliant parallel or "pre-glue" tool. The Waves CLA-2A Compressor / Limiter is a
Sidechain Filtering (Workaround): The CLA-2A lacks an internal sidechain filter. If the bass is making the compressor pump, place an EQ before the CLA-2A (like F6) and high-pass the low end at 100Hz. The compressor will only "see" the mids and highs, leaving your sub-bass uncompressed. Vocal processing : The CLA-2A is often used
Part 1: The Legacy – What is an Optical Compressor?
Before we understand the plugin, we must understand the physics. The LA-2A (Leveling Amplifier) uses an electro-optical attenuator. In simple terms: a light source (an electroluminescent panel) shines on a light-dependent resistor (LDR).
