Step 1: Identify your USB cable chip.
- Prolific PL2303 (Most common for UV-8D) – Does NOT work on Windows 11 with generic drivers.
- Silicon Labs CP210x (Newer cables) – Works best.
If you need a real deep article, I recommend searching for:
- Very basic – works, but looks like a Windows 98 program
- Clunky interface – frequency entry, offset, tone settings are not intuitive
- Limited OS support – often requires USB-to-serial driver (Prolific PL2303 or Silicon Labs CP210x)
- Not open source – and can be hard to find a genuine copy without malware risks
