Here’s a write-up on “100MB HEVC Movies” — a niche but increasingly popular trend among budget-conscious data hoarders, mobile users, and collectors of compact media.
Because HEVC is a newer codec, not every default player supports it.
AV1 is royalty-free and roughly 30% more efficient than HEVC. This means that a 100MB HEVC movie could become a 70MB AV1 movie with the same quality.
However, not everyone was pleased with the new format. Some argued that the compression was too aggressive, resulting in a loss of detail and a "video game-like" quality. Others complained about the lack of support for older devices, which couldn't play back the HEVC-encoded movies.

- CRF suggestion: 22–28 (lower = better quality; for tiny sizes favor higher CRF + tune)
- Two-pass ABR: target bitrate calculated from desired file size (see calculation below)
3. Legacy Hardware
Old tablets with 8GB of storage, iPod Touches, or handheld gaming devices can struggle to decode high-bitrate 1080p video. HEVC is computationally heavy to decode, but a tiny 100MB file is lightweight for old CPUs.
100mb HEVC movies refer to movies that have been encoded using the HEVC codec and have a file size of around 100 megabytes (MB). To put this into perspective, a typical full-length movie in HD (1080p) can range in size from 2-5 gigabytes (GB). This means that 100mb HEVC movies are significantly smaller than their HD counterparts, while still maintaining a high level of video quality.
